This issue began on or about August 1st. Instagram videos do not play on MacBook Air in either Safari or Chrome. OS Big Sur is updated. Caches emptied. After most recent update and restart, video played once, slowly, then no others would play. Clicking videos gets either a frozen image (Chrome) or black screen (Safari). Everything fine on iPhone 12.

Your suggestion worked! Turns out there was an old web security extension on all my browsers that was preventing video from playing. I removed it and video now plays.
