the phone was returned and I want to erase "find my iphone"

Returned to Xfinity mobile. They are saying the phone cannot be used till I erase the device(iphone). I did not turn on the Find My Phone" on the device because I did not use it. I don't think I am the original owner since the phone was given to me as part of a promotion by Xfinity. And it was a year old as well. Also I don't know the model or have the serial number(s).
