Firmware Update, or Locked Disk

I have a refurbished 2014 Mac mini, the place I bought it from a couple of months ago put a new ssd in it with Mojave. I tried to update the os, but I had to format APFS so I erased, formatted the HD APFS and attempted to reinstall the os.

Now when I try to install the “macOS Mojave” on the Mac Drive, I get the message:

“Your Mac needs a firmware update in order to install to this volume. Please select a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume instead.”

When I attempt to install it on the Recovery HD, I get the message:

”This disk is locked.”

I am stumped.

Hello, iProducer.

Sorry to hear you're having this problem with the Mac mini.

If able, I would boot to Internet Recovery mode (shift-option-command-R or option-command-R), use Disk Utility to erase and reformat the SSD to HFS+ using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and GUID partition map.

Then see if you can get macOS reinstalled.

• If you use Shift-Option-Command-R during startup, you're offered the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.

• If you use Option-Command-R during startup, in most cases you're offered the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac. Otherwise you're offered the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.
