What is "other" in my storage and why is it taking up so much space?

I'm pretty new to owning a MacBook, i keep getting notifications that my storage is almost full yet i have close to nothing on it. I mostly run after effects for my editing but i delete clips and projects almost immediately when i am finished with it. I don't understand what this "other" is and why it's taking up so much space. and if possible is there a way i can clean it up and remove some of the things that is taking up that space.
