What if I don't want to use iCloud?

Is there an option to turn off iCloud? I keep getting notifications about needing to pay to upgrade cause apparently iCloud is full (even though I've never intentionally used it), but if I delete my iCloud storage will it delete everything on my desktop too? I'm not paying money for iCloud.

Go to System Preferences->Apple ID->iCloud Drive->Options, and turn off Desktop and Documents folders there.

It will ask you if you want to keep the contents on your device. Answer yes.

With that done, you can completely turn off iCloud if you really want to.
