how can I update IOS to a newer version. Current software is OS X 10.9.5.

thank you, I clicked on the Download macOS using Safari on your Mac, and it took me to the app store, but says its installed. When I check the about me it has software version OS X 10.9.5. Any other helpful tips?

Yes, 10.13.6 is the last release of High Sierra.
Please look in the Applications folder for the installer. Once you find it please click it.
