MacOS TV App playing film video but no audio

First of all, this question has nothing to do with Apple TV vs an actual TV (I think...), I'm trying to watch movies on my Macbook like I used to do. However, the video plays but no sound. What's the issue? Sound works fine with everything else.

The TV app on my MacBook Pro (NOT on an Apple TV device), won't play sound for any video. It won't play to airpods or through speakers. Other videos play sounds (like YouTube on Safari) How can I get sound to play through the TV app on my MacBook Pro?

sound and hdmi cable Sound comes through MacBook Air, not the tv it is connected to. picture comes through hdmi cable to TV from laptop OK, but no sound

The TV app has a volume slider that works as a percentage of the device volume setting.

Verify that neither one is set to 0%.

Or use the keyboard shortcuts (see Controls menu).
