My MacBooks cooling fan won't stop running

Is there something I can do on my own? Im really trying to avoid having to take it in to the apple store. I have tried freeing up disk space, erasing old files... idk what's wrong, it sounds like its downloading something large constantly and my computer is getting really hot.
