Audio issues in FCPX on M1 iMAC - drop outs

The audio keeps dropping out on my M1 24-inch iMac when I use FCPX (10.5.4 - Big Sur 11.3.1). FCPX can still be used normally, you just can't hear anything. After a few seconds/minutes the sound comes back. Other programs continue to play sound normally. At first, the problem seemed random to me. In the meantime, I've noticed that it happens especially when I drag 4K files onto the timeline and edit them, so when the processor and memory are heavily used. Does anyone know of a solution?
