Strong password offered by Safari not saved in Keychain

This has nothing to do with autofill. Safari does not give the option to save the password when selecting the option to choose a strong password. There is no way to write it sown as the end is greyed out. Please is there a fix for this. Otherwise, what is the point of this function???

I had a long conversation with Apple support this morning. The answer? Engineers are looking into this !!! But this question has been asked umpteen times over the years and no simple answer to this forthcoming. I have little faith in anything Apple support would say.

Thanks Dominic 23. I tried all the suggestions but none solved the problem Safari not giving the option to save the password when selecting the option to choose a strong password.

Thanks for the help provided. I appreciated the response.
