My screen has gone completely black and does not come back on. I was watching a video when it happened and I could still hear the video playing. so the computer itself works, but the screen is black.

I assume your MacBook Pro has LCD back light issue. You'd better contact Apple Support or make Genius Bar reservation if your local retail Apple Store is open or find opened local Apple Authorized Service Provider to be examined your MacBook Pro there.
