Can I track steps in workout-outside walking

Here's where you'll see your total steps;

The workout app doesn't count steps directly.

AFAIK, the watch keeps track of your steps for the entire day, but not for a specific workout. I'm not sure why. This might be a good suggestion for a future enhancement to Apple:
