setting up external hard drive for Time Machine

I bought a Western DIgital 4TB 'My Passport for Mac' '2629 Media' 'Time Machine Ready' hard drive to use for Time Machine but the routine setting up wouldn't work.

So, I looked up the problem in Communities 'Help' and followed the advice - go to to 'Apps' - 'Disc Utility' - Mac OS Extended (journaled) and GUID partition map - click 'erase'.

But no joy.

Could anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong and how to do it right?

I'm on macOS Big Sur version11.4

For TM using 11 & up it needs to be APFS format & GUID.
