why character styles can't hold backgroundcolor?

I have read this page: https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/keynote/tanfce072687/mac

about 「add a background colour to text 」that have a tips:

Tip: If you often add colours behind text, you can create a character style that uses a particular text background colour. Then you can choose that style from the Character Styles pop-up menu to highlight selected text with that colour. You can also create a keyboard shortcut to apply the character style.

But, when I try do it, the styles can not hold the background.

How can I do ?

Then use Paragraph Styles, they are far more useful when designing layouts in Keynote.

Select the text then go to Inspector /Format /Text then click on the Paragraph Style box to show the Paragraph Styles menu

Click the blue + button to add a new style:

  1. Text styles are saved only in the presentation you have open, they are not available in other presentations.
  2. They are saved only for the specific theme being used, they are not available in other themes.

If you want text styles available for all new and existing presentations, create a Theme using that text style, (File > Save Theme)
