I'm unable to boot into macOS recovery mode to reinstall macOS on my Intel based iMac. Using an Apple wireless keyboard and holding CMD-R while starting just ends up with a flashing file folder with a "?". Any ideas how to get this to work? Do I need a USB connected keyboard?

Please use a USB keyboard, any will work just fine. If you use a Windows keyboard the Control key is the same as the Command key on a Mac keyboard. So use Control + R when starting up when using a MS Windows keyboard.

Boot into the Recovery Partition (Command + R on startup) and use Disk Utility to format the drive.
What is the model year of the iMac and what version of Mac OS is installed on it.

Thanks. I tried that and that is where I'm running into the issue. Holding CMD-R on startup doesn't seem to do anything. I'm using a wireless keyboard. Can that be the reason?
