I have and older iPad: MD788LL/B

What size cover do I need?

iPad Air, iOS 12

The iPad's screen measures 9.7" diagonally. The dimensions of the iPad itself are measured from the sides. Length and Width and are different to that 9.7" measurement.

Those covers work with a first generation iPad Air, which is what your model number refers to.

Its unlikely you'll find one without the prop-up feature, but you can just ignore entirely if you don't want to use it.

Thanks. I like the second one but the dimensions are LxWxH8.66 x 5.91 x 0.39 inches. The iPad measures 9.7" Amazon says the case fits the 9.7 iPad. I don't understand how a case smaller than the iPad can fit. Can you help me to understand?

Just about to order one of the covers you suggested. And then ....... someone in my (very large) building happened to place an iPad cover on a ledge near my apartment.. It is sturdy, made by Finite, and it fits!! Thanks for all of your help.

Your first generation iPad Air has a 9.7” screen. Perhaps more to the point, irrespective of the screen dimension, you will want a cover that is designed for a first generation iPad Air.

That is indeed the problem. I haven't been able to find one. I don't need to prop it up, and I don't have a separate keyboard. DO you have any suggestions. Greatly appreciated.
