I suddenly am getting the chime that sounds on startup, but want to turn it off. The "Play Sound on Startup" option is not appearing in my Sound panel. I have OS 10.14.6 (Mojave) installed, and this seems to have begun with an update. MacBook Pro. Any ideas?

No, this doesn't work--that's what I'm saying, the “Play sound on startup” setting doesn't appear in the Sound preferences panel.
It doesn't appear because you don't have Big Sur installed.
Oh, sorry, now I see...only in OS 11 and up? I'll try a Terminal command to see if I can turn it off. It hasn't played until this update. Very annoying.
No problem. The easiest thing to do would be to press the Mute key before shutting down or restarting.
