Can I connect Thunderbolt 1 ports of External Storage to the USB C in iPad Air 4th Generation?

The iPad Air4 USB-C port does not support Thunderbolt.
The iPad Air4 USB-C port does not support Thunderbolt.
Just for displays/monitors or for external exFAT drives too?
(I do not have any Thunderbolt 1 external drive to make a test).
