how do I insert page numbers manually

I am writing an essay in 'pages', and I can't figure out how to add pages numbers manually. I only need to apply page numbers to the essay itself rather than the title / reference page etc. Does anyone know how to do this so that the page number is at the bottom / middle of each page which I wish to number. I had previously done this by inserting a shape and a number inside that but the shape doesn't stay in the same place.

See this section in the Numbers User Guide:

You would add the page number in the middle cell of the three cells in the footer.

You can divide your Pages document into sections, one for the title/reference page and one for the essay itself.

Then have the page numbers in the second section only.
