Yes, you can use CarPlay with USB if the car USB port allows it, i.e., a data port vs. a charging port.

There is no usb c connection in the car though. - so do I lose my ability to charge the

phone and utilize car

play?

No. You don't lose anything. All you have to do is buy a USB-A to lightning cable.
