“Too hot” means the phone shut down and displayed a message saying that the phone had to cool down. Did this happen? If it didn’t the phone is not too hot.
If you charge any battery powered device it will get warm, and how warm it gets depends on how fast you charge it and what you are doing on the phone while it is charging.
