When I try to start up in recovery mode, the message only shows up on the screen for a fraction of a second so I don't know when to let go of the power button. Is there any other way to get into recovery mode?

If you are running 10.13 on your Mini as shown in your profile, then you do not have an M1; they were introduced last November (2020). 10.13 was introduced in 2017.
