I was setting up the external hard drive to my iMac for the first time. I dragged & drop the entire Documents folder to the external hard drive then the Documents folder disappeared from the Mac and I can not find it on the external hard drive either. Is there anyway to retrieve the Documents? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Julie
Why would you do that, you just have crated a mess. NEVER EVER move Mac OS folders to an External Hard Disk. I'd recommend restoring from your Time Machine backup. What you should move to an external HD is large libraries such as your :

Yup, that was what I was trying to say without being too stern. Glad you got it fixed though and as I mentioned if you are attemptng to free up space move your large libraries which typically are:
to the EHD.
Thanks for your reply. This teaches me not to move things around when I don't understand the process fully. However, I was able to recover all the files in the Documents folder on my iMAC. I keep searching for an answer and found it.

Don’t ever move the actual macOS folder to an external disk.
