"Airplay Display" is set permanently to OFF. How do I troubleshot that?

Under "Display Preferences", "Airplay Display" is set permanently to OFF. How do I troubleshot that. Both devices are on the same wifi network. I can't seem to get that Airplay icon to display at all. My iMac is on OS Catalina. I can't seem to connect to any other apple device: namely — my Macbook Pro or IPad Air 2.

Yes you can show your Mac screen using Airplay assuming you have Apple TV.

Apple TV connects wirelessly with your Mac or iPad and mirrors the image.

I do that all the time when I need to share my screen with the big screen TV via Apple TV.

I believe you have to get a newer Apple TV - HD or 4K version and put them on the same wireless network.

Thanks for your response. That does make sense. However, I have seen all sorts of articles online that declare that I should be able to connect to a Macbook or iPad via Airplay.
