Your Macbook cannot upgrade beyond macOS High Sierra (10.13.6). You will need a 2013 or later MacBook Pro, or a 2015 or later Macbook to install Big Sur.

Perform a Time Machine backup. Then using only Safari, visit How to get old versions of macOS, and follow the link for macOS High Sierra into the Mac App Store where you can download it.
