Hi, Please follow this thread as we discussion same issue for iPhone 8 and I visited the apple store and they will check and advise if this issue is faced by many users after recent version of IOS 14.5 update.
We should raise this at all levels so it can be addressed. I don't think it's an hardware issue. Issue is triggered after the recent 14.5 software update for iPhone 8 plus and in the month april for iphone 8 users.

You can’t restart an iPhone 12 that way. You can shut it down that way by sliding the shutdown switch, but no Apple logo will come up.
You are on the right track, however; after shutting down the phone, wait about a minute, then hold just the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Really? all 100 million iphone 8's? Mine must have escaped somehow.
Your referenced thread shows 1 "Me too" so it's hardly earth shattering.
Some phones of any make have hardware failures caused by the stress of upgrading which would have failed within weeks anyway.
After restarting the phone if you go to Settings/Wi-Fi and you can’t turn on the switch most likely your phone has experienced a hardware failure.
