Apps won't connect to the internet but could it be SIM

I have a problem with my iPhone 8.

I can use email, internet explorer and text messages, but none of my apps will connect to the internet, and, even though it says I am connected to WIFI in 'settings', the WIFI symbol does not appear in the top left hand corner.

It doesn't help if I turn WIFI off and use my mobile date either.

In desperation I did a factory reset on the phone and set it up again but it didn't help.

I really need Whatsapp for all the kid's sports, and in desperation set up a spare 6S that we use for music etc. It's only 16gb and has a rubbish battery, but I'm desperate. It was working fine until I put my SIM in and set it up with my apple ID. Now it has exactly the same problem.

Has anyone experienced this/had this problem?

Is it my SIM or my apple ID?

It started about the same time as I got a new credit card and one Apple payment was declined, but this was resolved when I updated my card.

Thank you

iPhone 8

I've sorted it!!

I installed a VPN ages ago, and this was mucking up internet connection.

I'm so relieved (but slightly scared at how reliant I am on my phone).

Thank you so much for helping me - I really appreciate your time :-)

You can try Troubleshooting wifi and cellular issues

1. Troubleshooting Wi-Fi Issues

Turn Your Wi-Fi Off Then Back On

The first thing to do when your iPhone won’t connect to the internet is to quickly turn Wi-Fi off and back on. This gives your iPhone a second chance to connect to your Wi-Fi network, which could resolve a minor software problem.

Open Settings and tap Wi-Fi. Then, tap the switch next to Wi-Fi at the top of the menu. Wait a few seconds, then toggle Wi-Fi on again.

Forget The Wi-Fi Network On Your iPhone

Sometimes forgetting your Wi-Fi network on your iPhone and setting it up like new can fix connectivity issues. When you connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network for the first time, it saves information about that network and how to connect to it. If part of that connection process has changed, it could be the reason why your iPhone won’t connect to the internet, or why your iPhone says “No Internet Connection.”

Make sure to write down your Wi-Fi password before you complete this step! You’ll have to reenter it when you reconnect to the network.

Open Settings and tap Wi-Fi. Tap on the information button next to your Wi-Fi network, then tap Forget This Network.

Next, go back to Settings -> Wi-Fi and tap on your Wi-Fi network to reconnect to it.

Restart Your Router

Sometimes the internet isn’t working because of an issue with your Wi-Fi router, not your iPhone. You may need to restart your router.

First, unplug your router from the wall. Wait a few seconds and plug it back in. Your router will boot back up and start to reconnect. Be prepared, this might take some time!

Troubleshooting Cellular Data Issues

Turn Cellular Off And Back On

Turning Cellular Data off and back on can sometimes fix minor connectivity issues. Open Settings and tap Cellular. Then, turn off the switch next to Cellular Data. Wait a few seconds, then turn it on again.

Eject and Reinsert Your SIM Card

A SIM card is what connects your iPhone to your carrier’s wireless network. Sometimes ejecting the SIM card and reseating it can fix connectivity problems.

Your iPhone SIM card is located in a tray on the side of your iPhone. Check out our guide on ejecting SIM cards if you need help! After reinserting your SIM card, try connecting to the internet.

Final Steps

If your iPhone still won’t connect to the internet after following of the steps above, you may have to perform a deeper reset on your iPhone. Before you do, head to Settings -> General -> Software Update and make sure your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS. Tap Download and Install if a software update is available.

Apple regularly releases iOS updates to fix minor bugs and problems, one of which could be preventing your iPhone from connecting to the internet.

update to ios 14.4

Reset Network Settings

When you Reset Network Settings, all Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Cellular, and VPN settings are restored to factory defaults. You’ll have to reconnect your Bluetooth devices and reenter your Wi-Fi passwords after completing this step.

Open Settings and tap General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. Then, tap Reset Network Settings when the confirmation pop-up appears. Your iPhone will shut down, perform the reset, then turn itself on again.

Repair And Support Options:

If none of software troubleshooting steps fixed the problem, it’s time to get in touch with a customer support representative at Apple, your wireless carrier, or your router manufacturer.

Yes....the factory reset would have rebooted the wifi settings ....we can try resetting network once more specifically for wifi and cellular . Also some times due to incomplete updation of device software can cause some problem for we you can try DFU.

DFU stands for Device Firmware Update, and it’s the deepest type of restore you can do on an iPhone.

You can google it that how you can put you iphone 8 in DFU also for this you need a pc running on mac os. And also backup your data before doing this

And then after DFU, try updating your software again.

(A Word Of warning ⚠️

When you DFU restore your iPhone, your computer erases and reloads every bit of code that controls the software and hardware on your iPhone. There’s the potential for something to go wrong.)

Or if you don't want to get into this then i will recommend you to contact apple support.

Thank you so much for helping. I tried that and no change.

I have moved the SIM back to the 8 and now the SIM-less 6 is behaving in the same way.

Connects to the internet for Internet Explorer and email, but not apps.

And the Daily Mail news is updating but when I go to comments it says 'Internet Connection Required'.

In settings I am logged onto the WiFi, but no Wifi symbol on the home screen.

AAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH!

It has to be the SIM or my Apple account.

It can't be the phone.

I'm guessing Apple account as it happens with no SIM in, and I am using both phones with my Apple account.

This sucks so much because I'm English, in NZ and Whatsapp is my lifeline home where my elderly parents and all my friends live. I need to find an Apple Store.

Thank you. I'm in NZ and it's bed time so I will try this when I have more patience!

One question though - this happens when WiFi is turned off and I'm using my Vodaphone mobile data.

Also - wouldn't the factory reset have rebooted all the WiFi?

My daughter's phone is working fine on the WiFi, as was the 6S before I put my SIM in.

Before I tried the other phone I spoke to someone in a repair shop who said it sounded like a hardware issue.

But this doesn't sound right if it's now happening to the 6S.

It's driving me nuts!!!

Could it be my iCloud account?

Neither the 6S with my SIM and logged into my Apple account, or the 8 with no SIM but also logged into my Apple account, show the wifi symbol. But email and Internet Explorer are fine on both. It's literally just apps. For example, the Daily Mail app (don't judge me!!) - I can get news up to date and it refreshes fine, but cannot go to the comments section. Facebook is updated but not FB messenger. It's driving me nuts!
