The phone died and now won’t turn on.
I made an appointment with a non apple tech bar but they couldn’t fix (wasn’t the battery)
now have an appointment with Apple but want to back up photos first- anyone have any ideas on how to retrieve the info?

If you cannot access the phone, then you will not be able to back it up. Hopefully, you have been doing this all along to either iTunes/Finder or iCloud. If you have been syncing your iPhone photos to iCloud, they should still be there.

The time for backups is prior to the problem. Same for a lost or stolen iPhone.
Apple may or may not be able to preserve or may or may not be able to extract data.
You’ll need to discuss that preservation with them at your appointment.
