In Numbers try File > Open and navigate to the Excel document to open it. Numbers will then import it into the native Numbers format.

The results often won't be perfect. Excel and Numbers are very different applications. So if you have to collaborate with people who use Excel exclusively then you are probably better off using Excel.

But in many situations the ability of Numbers to open/import Excel files can be very useful.

I have a problem with date fields from imported Excel. There seems to be no way to see them as dates, even after changing the format into Date and Time several times.

I suggest starting a new thread and giving more details on what you are seeing instead of dates.
