Change to list view in left window of Messages in Big Sur

How can I view a messages list rather than all the large icons - in the left window of messages in Big Sur

Mac mini 2018 or later

On the left there should be a list of conversations. They usually have an icon and a bit of the latest message. If you only see an icon, it is because you have reduced the width of that pane. Drag to enlarge.


The list of messages appears on the right... are you trying to invert that?


Maybe I am not understanding what you are trying to do. If so, please clarify.

Thank you for trying to help. I quit Messages and reopened and the left column returned to normal (you are correct, it is conversations). But formerly I was seeing Photos, Documents etc (as icons or thumbnails. I'm beginning to suspect my own sanity!!! At the moment it is all back to normal. Thanks again!
