Ethernet connection on new M1 MacBook Air not working or displaying correctly

This is best described with images.

Both Macs are running latest Big Sur, but when I connect the USB Ethernet adaptor into the M1 Mac, it does not show it as connected as the Intel Mac correctly does. Instead, it shows Bluetooth PAN as connected.

So, what's going on here? Is it actually connected by Ethernet but just not reporting/showing it correctly?

But I already *have* the Ethernet adapter. Adding one as suggested just adds another one to the list (showing disabled). Anyway, I tried removing/disabling Bluetooth PAN. With WiFi disabled, and with Bluetooth PAN now removed, I have no network connection. Ethernet still showing as not connected when my eyes tell me otherwise.
