When used with wired speakers through an audio system, that is only supported when “Volume Control through HDMI-CEC” is supported by the AV receiver. In that case use the Volume +/− buttons on the side of your mobile device.
As the iPhone doesn’t have an IR transmitter, it can’t send Volume Control signals to the TV or audio system directly, as the Siri Remote would do.
For wireless speakers, use the sliders in Audio Controls in Control Center.
