How can I recover my 6 digit pass code?

The pass code that I thought that I have always used to update my ipad with no longer work, how can I either recover it or replace it?

You cannot recover it. You have to erase the device using a computer. See this for more information.

You cannot recover a screen lock passcode. All you can do is reset it, which requires erasing it. If you still have access to it, you can go into general settings and choose “erase all content and settings”. If not, use iTunes (finder with MacOS Catalina or Big Sur) and restore it as a new device to erase it.
