Safari suggests password and then doesn't remember it

A website asked me to reset my password and Safari suggested a coded password so I accepted it. Then tried to log into the web site and the new password isn't saved in the keychain so I am logged out yet again! I saw this was an issue back in 2019 - has it really not been fixed by now?
