Update Mac OS from external hard drive

Hello, currently my iMac internal hard drive are dead. And using a external hardrive to boots it up and run a Mojave mac os.

Will it be able to update mac os direct from the app store? Or it still require a bootable drive?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.14

The external will just behave as an internal drive. It will have a recovery partition on it too.
