I have an iMac OS High Sierra that I bought in July 2012. Do I understand correctly that I can not upgrade it any longer?

My iMac is an OS High Sierra purchased in July 2012 Do I understand right that I will not be able to upgrade any longer? Do I need to purchase a new computer? What is the downside of continuing to use the old iMac? It has never had any issues, its been an excellent computer.

Thank you for your advise.

Debra
