Remove hard drive from iMAC
How do I remove the hard drive from my old iMAC before donating? Can I do it or do I need to have a professional remove it?

to learn how to remove the hard drive from your iMac, go to this page and click on your model. then on the next page, scroll down until you see the install videos. if you want to donate it, then instead of removing the hard drive, look at What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support. if you don't want to replace the hard drive to donate it, but do want to remove it, you might as well recycle it after removing the hard drive.
