On my MAC, when I click on Apple, System Preferences, there is no "Software Update" to click on. How do I update software?

Software Update didn't appear until Mojave 10.14. You would either click on System Preferences > App Store or open the App Store and click on "Updates".
I went to updates. It thought for about ten minutes and then said it timed out. I have Mac OS 10.13.6 but need 10.14 or better.
I have Mac OS 10.12.6, 2011. Guess I need a new one.
