Time Machine could not create a local snapshot to back up from.

What do I need to do to get Time Machine to back up after receiving this error message "Time Machine could not create a local snapshot to back up from"?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Usually this means there isn't enough free space on your internal hard drive to create a backup. Although you have an external drive to backup too, there is also some space on your internal drive necessary to create local snapshots.

Try to create more storage space on your internal drive https://support.apple.com/guide/system-information/optimize-storage-space-sysp4ee93ca4/mac
