Has anyone successfully connected an Apple Cinema Display 27" (A1316) with the mini display connection? I have tried to connect it with an HDMI adapter, but it does not work. I am guessing it must go thru the USB-C connection instead?
Has anyone had any success with this adapter?

That adapter should work to connect the display to a Thunderbolt/USB-C port. Plug the display's USB cable into one of the computer's USB-A ports.
If you want to connect to the HDMI port use a HDMI to DisplayPort converter
and a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort adapter.

I have an adapter that accepts the mini display plug and it plugs into the HDMI port on the M1. It does not work.
The cablematters.com link shows a HDMI to DisplayPort Adapter, this will not work for a mini display connector.
The startech.com link shows a Displayport to Mini Display Port adapter, at least the plumbing is correct, however I need it to be HDMI connection and not a standard DisplayPort.
Most (Mini)DisplayPort to HDMI adapters are for connecting HDMI displays to computers with DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort. They will not work in the other direction.
The Cable Matters does operate in the correct direction, but its output is DisplayPort, so you have to add an additional adapter to get to Mini DisplayPort.

I did not realize they were directional. I had an adapter that went from mini display(female) to HDMI(male), monitor to M1 Mac mini, yet this did not work. I guess this explains why?
