Whoever told you that was wrong. Accidental damage is not covered by the warranty. If you just broke the front screen it would be $29. But the back is the support for all of the internal components, so it can’t be replaced without rebuilding or replacing the phone. If you have AppleCare +, yes. Any repair other than the battery or the front screen is handled by replacing the phone.
