unplugged it for 10 sec while it was shut off and that did the trick

Use wired.
Ouch, try a different port(s).
Try another KB or schedule a Genius in-store appointment.
Schedule warranty repair (bring-in to Apple). Good luck.
I am using wired and it stopped working after the last Catalina update
I have tried all the ports. It was working fine before the update.
I have also tried restarting
will try another keyboard, but nearest apple store is 75 min away, so that's not happening.
