Can't pair iwatch and update software - says I am not connected to internet

I can't pair and update my apple watch and have tried all of the tips and advice. Tried to do the online chat but can't access the serial number for the watch as it is not paired to the phone. I can't view serial number on the back of the watch? Help please? I have wasted hours on this and just can't make it work....
