How do I get what’s app audio to work?

Each time I try to make a what’s app audio call, I hear the dial tone but when the person answers, I get no noise and it says reconnecting and then cuts out.

regular phone calls and FaceTime audio work like normal.

brand new 11 (3 days old) and all apps and iOS are up to date
