Apple Time Machine/Time Capsule
How do I connect the Time Machine to only act as back-up device? I have a new router, and do not want to use the router in the Time Machine.
Thanks, Jim Ferguson

Jump over to the computer.. ignore all my other instructions for now.. the main thing is it is visible in your computer.
There it is..
Now I will make only one change in preparation for using it to backup.
You need to erase the TC disk.. red box in screenshot.. warning.. all your previous backups will be deleted.. if you wish to save any then do archive first (green box in screenshot) using the option in airport utility to a USB Mac formatted drive plugged into the TC.
When you click erase disk just use the quick erase which will only take a minute or so.. then big sur can attempt to backup on this Time Capsule.. if you have issues tell me and use screenshot.
Screenshot for Mac.
I use Command + Shift + 4 then place crosshairs in one corner.. hold down mouse key and drag to the other corner.. release mouse key.. screenshot will go to the desktop with current date and time.
Screenshot for iPad.

Screenshot. Once I get the screenshot on the desktop, how do I get it into the email or Community conversation?
When you are replying or posting a new message, there is a list of items at the bottom of the window to put text in Bold, Italics, Underline, create a numbered list, bullet points, etc.
The next to last icon on the right side looks like two mountain peaks, representing a snapshot.
Click on the two peaks icon and a Finder window will appear. Select the Desktop, then click to select and highlight the screenshot file that is on the desktop., Next, click on Choose for Upload at the lower right of the window to add it to the current post that you are working on.
When the screenshot appears in the post, you can change the size of screenshot by clicking on it and 4 small "squares" will appear at each corner of the screenshot. Drag one of those corners to change the size of the screenshot to make it smaller or larger.
If you want to add a screenshot to an email, you would look for a button to "attach" a file, click on it, then use the Finder menu to navigate and select the file that you want to include with the email.
Reset the TC to factory. No files are lost on the hard disk.
Plug from LAN of your new router to WAN of the TC.
Reconfigure the TC from the airport utility in your computer.
It will be reconfigured in Bridge mode.
Once completed you can decide if you wish to continue to use the TC wireless or not.
Issues do arise so I recommend the following.
1 Do not use the same name as before.. make it short, no spaces and pure alphanumerics for everything
2 Passwords same rules but longer
3 Set IP to static once completed. The IP will remain the same as before but you need to fill in DNS.. I just use 8.8.8.8
4 Set IPv6 to link-local only.
On the internet options tab use the following option.
5 Fix up any other issues on the Time Capsule if there is anything outstanding.
6 Fix up Time Machine by pointing it to the newly renamed TC.. just remove the old TC name and change to the new one.
Time Machine will then pickup the change.. request a password and hopefully continue unabated doing backups.
7 All bets are off for big sur!!
Clear up one thing first.
just a Time Machine, no Capsule.
Time Machine is software on your computer.. you cannot press reset on Time Machine.. it does not exist.. what you have is a Time Capsule.. i.e. a box that looks like this.
Do you have an iPhone or iPad.. as they tend to be easier than computer to configure the TC (Time Capsule) ??
Anyhow.. from the computer.. airport utility should look like this.. NOTE.. I have setup exactly as described above.. my TC WAN port is plugged by ethernet to the main router.. the computer has wireless connection to the main router.
Click on Other WiFi Devices (1) which means a new one has been found.
(If this does not show up turn off airport utility and start it up again)
So this is the new TC for your network. Click on the name of the TC.. which will look similar to the above with a different number.
A discovery process will begin.
Now what you select does not matter a great deal but names should comply with my previous instructions.. short.. try and do <8characters.
Leave the wireless network on for now. In my case it has chosen create a new network.. this is wrong but we can fix up after setup.
click next.. up to you for send diagnostics or not.
click next and success. If it fails.. reboot the TC and restart Airport Utility.. it is fairly dumb.
Part 2 coming
On the Airport Utility your TC now looks thusly.. maybe with errors maybe not.
Click the icon of the TC and see what is says.. errors might be double NAT.. or a bunch of things.
Interestingly my TC has chosen to setup correctly even though it said create a network it is actually in bridge which is correct.
Now click the edit in the summary.
Screen 1 This is the main TC name and password area.. nothing to change.
Click the Internet Tab.. and change to static. (as per previous instructions)
Screen 2 Internet Tab
Fix to static.
Change DNS to whatever.. same as above is ok.. i.e. whatever was previously shown as DNS.. but I use standard public.
Screen 3 Internet Options. Click on Options on the internet tab.
Change first area to link local only.
Click Save near bottom of this screen.
Screen 4 Wireless. Select Off. Unless you want to use the TC wifi in some area of your house.
Screen 5 Network
Ensure it says.. Bridge Mode.. change it if required.
Now click update.
Mine completed all happy.. if yours fails.. reboot the TC and restart the Airport Utility.
If you have issues.. post the screenshot from the airport utility so I can see what is happening.. That helps loads.
The little hole, in your picture next to your TC's power cord hole, is what I pushed to reset
The back of a 2011 TC looks like the example below. The reset button is located on the right side of the back panel, just to the left of a slot that is used with security devices. There is a small printed arrow just above the button.
With the TC powered on, hold in the reset button for 7-8 seconds and release the button
Give the TC a full minute to restart back to a slow, blinking amber light status
Open AirPort Utility again and check the Other WiFi Devices button to see if Time Capsule appears there
If it does, click on Time Capsule to start the set up process and follow the instructions that LaPastenague has provided for you above
If you want to use an iPhone or iPad for the setup.......
Go the Home Screen on the device
Tap on Settings
Tap on WiFi
Tap on Time Capsule just under the heading of Set Up New AirPort Base Station
There is no need to repeat posts.. I can see all the posts just as Bob (in Tx) can.
Not everything here adds up.. You do seem to be starting the setup but it is failing half way through.. then you say it does not work at all.. a bit unsure..
Anyway get out your trusty iPad and download Airport Utility.
Anything you don't know how to do.. google it.
I got a new iPad so downloaded airport utility from app store.. it is free.
And this is with ancient Gen4 TC I had lying around.
Full factory reset.. hold in reset button and then power on.. keep holding in reset for about 10sec.. then wait for it to start working.
Plug ethernet from main router to WAN on TC.
Then to discover the TC.. On the iPad, go to settings.. WiFi Look down the right hand column and you will see
Setup New Airport Base Station. Tap it.
It will begin discovery process.
Don't over worry about what it chooses.. we will fix it up later from the computer which is MUCH EASIER.
I did change the name and put in suitable password. which got me to here.
Now you can see the details in the airport utility on the iPad or iPhone if your eyes can still see it.
You have successfully setup the TC.. easy peasy.. the iOS version utility is easier to get working IMHO.
Now you can open it in the Airport utility on the computer.. note carefully that IP address as you might need it.
Mine is showing 192.168.20.206
Thank you very much for trying to help me, but I am far too unknowledgeable to be able to carry out your instructions. I have just a Time Machine, no Capsule. It had been my router and backup.
I reset TM at the push-in in back. I connected new router to TM, as directed. TM blinks orange. I opened Airport Utility, only thing shown is big ball with lines around it, green dot at Internet TM does not show. I renamed my WIFI after new router. Is that preventing TM from showing?
I understand if this help takes more time than you have, but I'm stuck before getting very far. Any further thoughts?
My TC (you are correct, of course, it is printed on the bottom, TC 2TB, 2011) is an 8"x8"x1.5" flat square. The little hole, in your picture next to your TC's power cord hole, is what I pushed to reset. Connected by ethernet from router to TC. Modem connected to router. Computer must be wireless to TC. Opened Airport utility, clicked on Other WifI devices, "No new wifi devices discovered. Your instruction is turn off airport utility and start it up again; not sure what/how to do that. I closed the utility, but get the same when reopening. Orange blinking light. The router has a light on for the symbol one square over two squares with a space between them, which goes off when ethernet is unplugged.
I am at a stop. Why can't my computer see the TC? Is is because the WIFI net has a new name +PW? Again, apologies for lack of ability, and much appreciation for help.
Jim
HOORAY + TYVM! I had not pushed the reset for long enough. Made good progress. Got down thru your instructions to the
"Off (Bridge Mode)". But then, problems: Update is not lighted, cannot make it work. Cancel is lighted, only option. I moved from Network to Wireless to Internet, same thing, only Cancel. , So I'll take that as a Fail, reboot the TC and restart the Airport Utility.
I don't know how to take a screenshot and post it, sad to say.
Will try again.
I only posted to clarify on the location and action of the reset button.
To avoid confusion, I am not going to comment on the other instructions that LaPastenague has already posted, so you'll need to wait for him to respond.
Thanks for entering in. I had not realized a new party had entered, thought that LaPastenague had abandoned his Sting Ray moniker and was using a real name. Any help is obviously need by this non-technically competent user, and appreciated.

Oh, yes I have an iPad and iPhone; clueless as to how to do Airport Util w/ them.
It is time to learn.. Since your computer is running big sur and I am the useless one on that score.. please download the airport utility from apple store for your iPad and I will take you through the process..
This would be 1000% easier if your computer actually had an ethernet port. Apple has really made this much harder by refusing to use standard ethernet on their laptops. Desktops do still have it so if you have a desktop tell me.
I am in Australia.. and hence when you sleep I am awake and visa versa.. replies can take a while.
As a secondary BTW your TC is well past use by date.. it might still work but is well and truly needing replacement.
Still the StingRay
Thank you for spending much of your free time noodling over my issues. Aus has been a favorite place for me. After USNavy boat skipper duty in Vietnam in 1966, hitched ride to Sydney on RAAF plane. that had delivered a huge antenna. Skied and toured for 2 mos, great time w/ grazier's daughter, did a stint at station, went back to USA, lived life. Back to OZ twice, on business (mining investments) and cruising w/wife to NZ and east coast Oz. Now retired, 80 in May. I need a14 year old! Son is v/good computer user but he's 42, in SanFran, working hard. So I try to use resources like you on the web.
Below are my posts to Bob Timmons, thinking they were to you, giving my current situation

1/29/21, 8:56AM,
Should the Base Station Password be the new router password? That's what I have now. Does this make the TC want to be in the WIFI net? is that causing the fail?
1/29/21, 9:03AM,
Went thru whole set-up again, same result: after Network to Off (Bridge Mode), only Cancel is lighted, cannot Update.
Suggestions? Thanks, Jim
And now, apart from trying to use what is past its use by date, what do you suggest as a replacement for my trusty rusty TC 2TB? I keep a lot of personal financial stuff on MS Excel and MS Word. Not sufficiently tech to know for sure, but I think much is now in the CLoud. Do I need a big hard drive of mu own? DK if I really trust the cloud.
Tks, Jim Ferguson
Sunday am now. I'm good down to erase/archive, but do not have another hard drive to archive to, so stopped. I would lose everything if I erase the TC; reluctant to do that. Need to buy a new back-up anyway (use by date:too old), so I'll research what to get. Could take some time.
Thanks.
