Missing time machine files

I have been backing up my files on an external drive using time machine for the last few years. When I bought a new laptop (MacBook Pro 2020, Mac OS 11.1) and connected the external drive, the backup reads only to the date of the new laptop from a few months ago. Where are my files going back a few years?

When I connect that same external drive to my old laptop, all the files are present.

Why can't I see my Time Machine backup files? Hi, everyone. I had an iMac i5 and I had a Time Machine backup. Now it is broken and I have bought a MacBook M2 so I've decide to recover the Time Machine files. I saw that there are it a lot files. So, I've decided to deleted some back up directories (first 10 back up that I've ever done, so NOT ALL). Now I see the latest folders (lastest backups that I've done), but the only files there are it, is the files in the Download directory. I think it is impossible to recover the other one files (beacuse in the Time Machine there are only 20GB, but it should be contain 200GB), but I want to know why this is happened Thanks in advance. Big sur look at old time machine saves made from Catalina? I have a MacBook Pro 16 with the latest Mac OS 11.0.1 My external Time Machine disk goes back about a year. But when I open Time Machine in Big Sur, it doesn't see the "old" backups I did with Catalina and Mojave. Is that "normal" that Time Machine doesn't look back before Big Sur was installed? Thank you, Larry

Try holding down the Option key when entering Time Machine and select "Browse Other Backup Disks…" from the menu. Then select the same disk and see if that will let you go back further in time.
