If you take your eligible device to an Apple Store, you can either use its value towards a new device - or take the trade-in value as an Apple Gift Card to use against a future purchase.

Should you instead choose trade-in when making an online purchase with Apple, you’ll be sent a shipping box in which to return your old iPad within a certain period of time. You will be charged full price for your new iPad against your Credit Card. When your old iPad has been received/inspected/accepted for trade-in, you will receive a refund of the trade-in value to your Credit Card; if your trade-in fails to arrive, or is rejected, you’ll not receive the Credit Card refund - and will therefore have paid the full price.

There is normally a short period of time between receiving your new iPad and having to return the old device. This period is adequate to transfer your data between devices.

Many who trade-in an old device choose to visit the local Apple Store - where the transaction is immediately concluded. This removes any debate as to the condition of the device returned for trade-in (i.e., it’s either accepted - or rejected), removing any uncertainty.
