I’m planning on buying this apple watch series 4 gps+cellular. do I have to pay for the cellular plan or can I just use the gps feature alone?

You do not have to subscribe to a cellular plan if you don't want to. If you do not, the watch will behave just like the GPS only watch.

You can use the watch without a cellular plan,in order to make calls and send texts you will need to have your phone with you.

Can be used with gps alone can add cellular later.
