How to erase a hard drive on a new MacBook Air?

Erasing a hard drive on a new MacBook Air failed using Command+R. What should I do that will work?

Utility Disk is not giving me the option to erase my MacBook '11 hard drive I recently erased the Bootcamp partitioned drive on my MacBook '11 laptop (ver. 10.10.5 Yosemite) and when I went back to try & launch Mac OS Diagnostic, I was unable to get back to that utility at boot up (after many unsuccessful attempts via Command+R keys and Command+Option+Shift+R). When I go to Utility Disk to try and erase the hard drive from there, the option to Erase is not available. Can someone provide guidance/insight on how I can wipe my MacBook hard drive some other way? Can I try from a another Mac computer and connect via Firewire?

Preparing old MacBook Pro for trade-in issues - no disk utility options I've gotten through all of the steps as described on https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201065 but when I go forward with the last step, and attempt to erase my hard drive then reinstall macOS it seems to skip the disk utility step in which I erase my hard drive. Here's what happened: I started on the first step of using disk utility to erase my Mac for intel-based Macs. When I start it up with simultaneously holding Command R, it presents the language selection screen as if starting all over. What should I do next? This makes me think I didn't have to go through with all those other steps, but I want to protect my information and do this trade in process correctly.
