I am trying to use iMovie 10.2.2 to export a screen recording

Does anyone actually use iMovie regularly? I am trying to use iMovie 10.2.2 to export a screen recording (.mov from quick time). It estimates that the size of the resulting mp4 file is 10GB. (.mov was 5GB).

I have tried all the tricks and tips shared in previous discussions of this topic, but without success. The export still wants to take ages but usually crashes after a couple of hours. Who thinks and works in terms of a couple of hours in 2021?

It seems to me that Apple really should not be distributing software that is a) slow, b) unstable and c) apparently needs tips and tricks to persuade it to work at all and then extremely slowly.

Apple usually has a good reputation for software design.

Is iMovie the exception that proves the rule, or has the team responsible for iMovie all reached a certain age and Apple has not noticed that they have long since retired?

Hi,

Sometimes preferences can get disrupted. Try deleting preferences, as that often cures export issues. Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.

The exported Mp4 likely was less compressed than the .mov file that you started with. Thus larger file size. iMovie unpacks an imported video clip so that it can be edited. The video clip may have been highly compressed. Upon being exported iMovie's format may have been less compressed. Other things that can affect file size are higher bitrate and faster frame rate.

Another thing that can cause crashing is insufficient disk space, either for the app to run efficiently, or to store the movie at its chosen designation. So, check your available free space and confirm that you have enough.

Sluggish performance can also be an indication that your System Management Controller needs resetting. It is a simple matter of shutting down and rebooting while holding down certain keys. Reset the Controller and see if that helps. Here's a link that explains the process.
